
Engaging Students in Cancer Biology Through Hands-On Labs

Bring real-world science into your classroom with an innovative, NGSS-aligned cancer biology curriculum designed for grades 6–12. This session offers a deep dive into teaching strategies that make complex topics, such as genetic mutations and cancer, accessible and engaging for students at different grade levels. Participants will examine sample artifacts of student work, explore strategies to support sense-making, and discover ways to foster curiosity and deeper understanding of biology concepts.
The session also features the Edvotek's Cancer Gene Detection lab, where participants will preview hands-on lab activities that empower students to explore the science of cancer through DNA analysis and experimentation. Learn how to adapt these resources for a variety of student needs and classroom settings.

About the Teacher

Michael Dixon
Dewey Elementary School of Excellence
Michael is a passionate educator dedicated to fostering a love for science in students. Graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2019, he continued his academic journey by earning a Master's degree in Science Education from DePaul University. Currently, Michael teaches middle school science, spanning grades 5 to 8, at Dewey School of Excellence. Beyond the classroom, he indulges in outdoor adventures through hiking, unwinding with arcade games, and enjoying the strategic challenges of board games in his free time.
