Summer Biotech Series
Join a community of teachers and test out biotech labs!
Are you fascinated by gel electrophoresis and other biotech related techniques? Have you ever wanted to learn more about the techniques behind COVID testing kits? Then the Summer Biotech Series sounds right for you! The Summer Biotech Series is a free 3-day program that gives teachers the opportunity to work on biotechnology related lab activities. Teachers will be able to earn CEU credits for participation in the workshop. Lunch is provided!
Logistics:
- Dates: Tuesday, June 11th - Thursday, June 13th
- Times: 10am - 3pm
- Location: Whitney Young High School (211 S Laflin St, Chicago, IL 60607)
- Facilitators: Mary Clark, Michael Dixon and The Baxter Center
- ISBE Credits: Participants will receive 15 ISBE Professional Development credits for their participation.
Labs and techniques that will be explored include:
- Gel Electrophoresis
- Pipetting
- Bacterial Transformation or Resistance (from miniOne)
- Disease Transmission (from Bio-Rad)

About the Teachers
Mary Clark
Whitney M Young Magnet High School
Before becoming a teacher, Mary worked in a few research labs studying topics ranging from environmental pressures on plants to developing neurons and their migration patterns during embryonic development. Mary enjoys the challenge of teaching science especially when classes focus on creative problem solving. She teaches chemistry and biotech and loves knitting, gardening and reading in her spare time.
Michael Dixon
Dewey Elementary School of Excellence
Michael is a passionate educator dedicated to fostering a love for science in students. Graduating from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2019, he continued his academic journey by earning a Master's degree in Science Education from DePaul University. Currently, Michael teaches middle school science, spanning grades 5 to 8, at Dewey School of Excellence. Beyond the classroom, he indulges in outdoor adventures through hiking, unwinding with arcade games, and enjoying the strategic challenges of board games in his free time.
