Genes in Space Virtual Workshop: Electrophoresis and space research in your classroom

Application Due: Monday, January 23, 2023
Date and Time: Wednesday, February 22, 2023 from 5-7pm CST
Location: Virtual, Zoom
Facilitators: Katy Martin from miniPCR bio & The Baxter Center

Join the Genes in Space team for a remote, hands-on professional development session! Genes in Space is a contest that challenges students to design DNA analysis experiments for space. One winner will have their experiment launched to the International Space Station and carried out by astronauts. Participants in this session will learn about the upcoming 2023 contest, and will have a chance to take part in a guided, hands-on lab activity based on Genes in Space research.

This session will focus on Microbe Hunters, a new lab from miniPCR bio in which students use gel electrophoresis to determine whether dangerous microbes are growing aboard the International Space Station. Participants will use the Bandit STEM Electrophoresis Kit to build a working gel electrophoresis system that they will use to carry out the lab. (Note: All participants will receive a kit containing the equipment and reagents they need to participate in the demo. The kit will be theirs to keep.)

By participating in the program you will:

  • Get the materials and equipment delivered to you to try out at home. You will receive materials for a hands-on demonstration of the Bandit STEM Electrophoresis Kit
  • Plan with a community of educators plus miniPCR and Baxter Center staff to reflect on how activities can be brought back to their virtual and/or in-person classroom.
  • Earn CEUs for participating!
