Empowering Chicagoland Communities: Understanding Water Quality Through Biology-Based Home Testing

Presenter: Siyuan Feng, Dylan Brown, & Vanessa Bly, Northwestern University

The global water crisis is among the most urgent issues of our time. As part of the WISE-DX team, we are developing biology-based sensors (“biosensors”) that can detect key water contaminants and using these to create at-home tests that improve access to water testing. As part of this work, we are interested in helping teachers develop curriculums related to water, water testing, and biosensing. At this session, we will describe some of the scientific and community research we have completed, demo a hands-on activity suitable to high school students, and describe future opportunities for collaboration.
