Tidings of Criticality and Joy: Black Joy and Cultural Relevance in Biology Curriculum

Presenter: Eddie Taylor, Jr., Simeon Career Academy

What is Black Joy and why should it be included in biology curricula? This discussion will explain the significance of Black Joy and culturally relevant pedagogies to science education, especially biology. While biology is the focus content area, all science teachers are welcome to engage in this Critical discussion on how to better honor the cultures and lived experiences of students and their ancestors, while also improving student discourse. Since these practices are encouraged to take place throughout the school year, we will workshop methods of including Black Joy in multiple units/topics commonly discussed in biology.
