July 25th - August 5th from 9am - 3pm

Does the idea of gaining research experience at a university lab sound exciting to you? The Research Experience for Teachers is a 2 week, paid program that gives five outstanding teachers the opportunity to conduct experiments with members of Professor Michael Jewett’s lab and work on curriculum development with Baxter Center staff.

Professor Jewett is a member of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at Northwestern University. The Jewett lab is at the cutting edge of synthetic biology and develops cell-free biological technology for biomanufacturing life-saving therapeutics, advanced materials, and sustainable chemicals, both quickly and on-demand. For more information about the Jewett Lab visit their website.

Experiments and techniques that teachers will work on include:

  • Cell-free protein synthesis
  • DNA manipulation/cloning
  • Biobits/CRISPR
  • Biosensor
  • Biobits pilot for luciferase

  • Dates: July 25th - August 5th
  • Times: 9am - 3pm
  • Location: Northwestern University (Evanston)
  • Facilitators: The Jewett Lab and The Baxter Center
  • Stipend: $2,000

Apply by Friday, July 15th!

If you have any questions, please reach out to The Baxter Center at We look forward to working with you!

Facilitator: Suzanne Fetherling

Time: 5:00pm - 8:00pm (dinner provided)

Location: Round Lake Senior High School, 800 High School Drive, Round Lake, IL 60073

Learn more about DNA and how it makes proteins by making your own fluorescent proteins and more!

BioBits were developed by a group of synthetic biologists to help students learn biology by doing biology. Traditionally, running molecular biology experiments outside of a lab has been difficult due to the expensive equipment and complexity of growing living organisms. BioBits takes advantage of cutting-edge freeze-dried cell-free technology to make it possible to run biological experiments without living cells.

This workshop is perfect for teachers of General Biology, AP Biology, Health Sciences, or Biotechnology students.

Participants will be able to access all materials needed for the lab FOR FREE through our Baxter Box Loaner Program
