This workshop is an opportunity for teachers of upper level high school electives like BiotechMicrobiologyGenetics, and Forensics to try out new hands-on activities selected to introduce students to real-world techniques used in modern laboratories. Participants will learn how to incorporate 21st-century lab skills including pipettingDNA gel electrophoresisPCR (polymerase chain reactions), and SDS-PAGE protein analysis into their curriculums in a meaningful way. With a focus on understanding the science behind the techniques, teachers are trained to troubleshoot and modify labs on the fly, and to feel confident in their general lab skills.

Activities include:

  • Pipetting Practice
  • Candy Dye Gel Electrophoresis
  • GMO Investigator
  • Crime Scene Investigator
  • Comparative Proteomics
  • Space Food Safety Lab

Teachers are trained in multiple lab activities and earn access to free lab materials and loaner equipment through the Baxter Box program.

Participants earn 6 CPDUs.
