This workshop is an opportunity for teachers to try out new twists on traditional AP Biology labs as a way to introduce and reinforce the Big Ideas of the course. Participants will learn how to incorporate 21st-century lab skills & practices including pipetting, DNA gel electrophoresis, and PCR (polymerase chain reaction) into their course in a meaningful way. With a focus on understanding the science behind the techniques, teachers are trained to troubleshoot and modify labs on the fly, and to feel confident in their general lab skills.
Activities include:
- Pipetting Practice
- Candy Dye Gel Electrophoresis
- Cancer Gene Detection
- Crime Scene Investigator
- Restriction Digestion and Analysis of Lambda DNA
- pGLO Transformation
- Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration with Algae Beads
- C. elegans Behavior and Chemotaxis
Participants earn access to free lab materials and loaner equipment through the Baxter Box program.
Participants earn 6 CPDUs.
