Hands-on Labs Exploring Proteins & Proteomics

July 18 - 20, 2017

Lindblom Math & Science Academy

Facilitator: Mary Clark (Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry Instructor)

In this advanced-level workshop, teachers explore hands-on, inquiry-based, NGSS-aligned labs that use proteins to explore structure and function. Led by an expert teacher and Northwestern scientists, teachers are trained in protein-based techniques including chromatography, SDS-PAGE, and colorimetric assays. Teachers learn to troubleshoot and modify labs on the fly, and to feel confident in their general lab skills. Our goal is for teachers to be able to “think outside the kit.”

Activities include:

  • ELISA Immuno Explorer
  • Comparative Proteomics
  • Green Florescent Protein Chromotography
  • Green Florescent Protein SDS-PAGE
  • Mini-Toobers & Fold-It
  • Size Exclusion Chromotography
  • EPO Analysis with Bradford Assay

Teachers are trained in multiple lab activities and earn access to free lab materials and loaner equipment through the Baxter Box program.

Participants earn 18 CPDUs.
